The Mac-formatted My Passport Studio is equipped with FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, a capacity gauge, and a drawstring carrying bag for protection against scratches and dirt. The new portable hard drive is also available in capacities of 250 Gbytes and 160 Gbytes.
The devices, which weigh less than 5 ounces, are useful for carrying office files, digital music, videos, and photos. They can also be used for backing up a Mac notebook using Apple's Time Machine software utility, which is a part of the Leopard operating system, formally called Mac OS X v10.5. Leopard, released in October 2007, is the sixth major release of Mac OS X.
My Passport Studio products feature shock-resistant enclosures and are USB-bus powered, so there's no need for an external power adapter. "We designed the My Passport Studio portable drives to work seamlessly with Apple's Time Machine, making this drive an ideal storage solution for creative pros on-the-go who require high performance storage to back up and carry their massive amounts of digital content," Jim Welsh, VP and general manager of Western Digital's consumer electronics group, said in a statement.
The Mac version of My Passport Studio comes with a five-year limited warranty. The devices are available through retail stores and from Western Digital's online store. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $130 for the 160-Gbyte model, $190 for the 250-Gbyte version, and $220 for the 320-Gbyte model. On Wednesday, the two larger models were out of stock on the Western Digital store.
Western Digital in April started shipping the latest version of VelociRaptor, the company's fastest internal hard drive for PCs, Macs, and professional workstations. The new 10,000-revolutions-per-minute SATA drive holds up to 300 Gbytes, which is twice the storage of previous versions, in a 2.5-inch form factor.
