The three-story outlet's nearly 20,000 square feet of retail space, opening Thursday, will feature a dramatic glass facade and will house a full complement of Apple products, including more than 100 Mac laptops, 64 iPod players, and several iPhones. The roof is partially covered with vegetation that will cool the building in summer and help keep it insulated in winter.
Fearing the modern design would clash with the neighborhood's older brownstone buildings, the city's Back Bay Architectural Commission had insisted on design changes that dragged out the planning stage. With an eye to attracting the tens of thousands of Boston-area students, Apple had initially planned to keep the store open 24 hours a day, but later opted for more traditional office and store hours.
While waiting for official approval and for construction to be completed, Apple improved and built out a network of Apple stores in the suburbs around the city.
