Called Vidnik, the application is available through Google's Web site at no charge.
However, Google on Monday reported that it had received reports that Vidnik-made movies worked fine on the Mac, but that the sound was out of sync with the picture when YouTube encoded the video. Google developer David Phillip Oster, who built the software, said he was looking into the problem.
Google makes a number of applications for the Macintosh operating system. Some are full-time projects and some Google developers work on part time. Some projects, such as MacFUSE, are mature and are supported by Google. MacFUSE implements a mechanism to implement a fully functional file system in a user-space program on Mac OS X, according to Google.
Other Google-made Mac software are unsupported technology demos that the company provides solely for experimentation and entertainment.
Google's newer Mac projects include Visigami, an image search application and screen-saver; and AppMenuBoy, which creates a hierarchical menu in the Mac's application dock.
Google also has recently updated its CoverStory application. Version 3.0 of the user interface for analyzing files using gcov on the Mac has a number of improvements, such as better error handling, support for code complexity analysis and several bug fixes. Gcov is an open-source tool used in code testing.
Google also recently updated its GData software tool for writing Objective-C applications that talk to Google services through GData application programming interfaces. GData APIs provide a "simple protocol" for reading and writing data on the Web, according to Google.
